Dark Side of the Lens -the best digital short video about surf photographers

This is an oldie but goodie from Astray Films. No matter how much time passes, after watching this film I still get the same excitement and fire that fuels creative passion. Watch the video, it lets you see behind the scenes of the Surfing world.

Jericho Rosales and Ian Lorenos showcase their Film Alagwa (Breakaway) at the Newport Beach Film Festival 2013

Alagwa BIFF Poster 2012

Wondering what a film review is doing in a surf magazine? When the main star happens to be one of Manila’s pioneering surf idols you begin to see the connection. I wrote this article for the Philippine Star Entertainment Section after Alagwa (Breakaway) made its USA debut back in January 2013 for the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Breakaway has returned to American audiences and will screen at the Newport Beach Film Festival, April 25 – May 2 . The film’s director Ian Lorenos and producer/actor Jericho Rosales will be at the screenings to greet the Orange County audience.

This is an important film that addresses human trafficking, a sensitive issue that is more rampant than we realize.  The work of Ian and Jericho bring Pinoy Indie Cinema to the forefront and make us all proud.  The Philippine audience has to be patient and await the Film’s Philippine debut after it has finished it’s Global Film Festival run. Believe me, it’s well worth the wait.

Breakaway will screen April 28, 4:30pm at the Triangle and April 30th 3:00pm at Fashion Island Cinema

I’m certain this weekend’s OC release will continue to captivate audiences. The following is a recap of its first American release last January 2013 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival…

The Simple Life…

No matter where you are in the world the stoke is always the same. A young grom about to charge at his own secret spot.  This is grassroots surfing, Northern Philippines style.

A look back at the 2012 Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing.

It was aways an annual pilgrimage to shoot the triple crown in Hawaii. My best bud along with our shaper lived out on sunset point and despite it resembling a circus, it was a fond homecoming to visit the boys on da nort chore.

Since relocating to the Philippines, I have missed the “crown” for so many years and relive it by browsing Surfing Magazine’s 2012 recap with the fine photo talents of Steve Sherman, Jimmicaine, Corey Wilson, Duncan MacFarlane, and Mike Killion. Check it out.

The B-Roll… the lost surf imagery files

Sometimes I’m simply just on the beach watching…  I could be there shooting an event, surfing in my off time, or merely just watching the sunset.  If I’m not surfing at that moment, odds are that I’ll have my camera.  If the images aren’t needed for an assignment, sometimes they get filed away and are forgotten (temporarily).  These are the B-Roll. -Important images that may have missed the first cut. Nonetheless, they are images that I fancy, hope you do too.

For all those who remember me out in the water or on the beach on that dream session… I have your shots [smile] look for them in our “Hall of Fame” section.

It’s debatable where, or how, surfing originated in the Philippines. This image is a clue to where it all began. Stay tuned for the photo essay that will shed light on where it all started.
